Magazine, Label & Online Radio Show Celebrating Outsider Music, Art, and Activism
Collapsed Arc is another one of the many projects of Cleveland multitalent David Russell Snake. This tour only tape exemplifies the artists highly crafted noise loops, made from
Hand persuasion, feedback, white noise plasma and undulating modulations fuzz. At times sounding like industrialized hip hop instrumentals (especially the first minute which jumps out of the gate with a sinister distorted head nod) and then going into subtly modulated feedback loops of noise and microphone / piezo feedback- high frequency inner ear trauma for the stunted listener. Beautiful walls of distorted mini wind instruments rip a skin mask from your worried face and wrap it around and around until it squeezes new frequency out of dense breath. Often mechanical
Sounding and often organic- Thw noise loops on this cassette are constantly shifting in their origin and purpose but never stray conceptually or sonically away from an acutely precise presentation and structure. The peaking high frequency squeaking chaos crescendos do an almost fever pitch and then a beat drops in- even if just a bass hit – and the entire orientation is restructured. these have a raw but rehearsed feel, NOT overworked, yet at the same time, not half assed by any stretch, the pitch, duration, timbre, sequencing and overall structure all ebb and flow with an apparent natural effortlessness.
The second half of the A side brings in more minimal
Breakdowns that escalate into controlled noise/beat/loop chaotic conundrums.
The second side offers more of the same fine crafted dense persuasive percussive tight loops- blending drum sounds, percussive elements and sharply carved noise and feedback blasts, ebbing and swelling yet always maintaining a dynamic intensity and consciousness.
The sound sources are seemingly unknown- I thought I hear voices? But it might be not so – modulated reeds, winds, oscillators, crunched hand percussion and oscillators modulate through organized sonic storms of chopped rhythms- Collapsed Arc work has always been loop based, but these take the project to a new level, skillfully and carefully composed and executed warbling tones of hell-
Beautiful artwork as always from

DecaycastREVIEWS : FORREST FRIENDS “40 Winks Of Dyre” cs (Cryptic Carousel , 2013)
Forrest Friends crafts together fever dream psychedelia “toy” noise/musique concrete through various instruments which of many can e categorized as broken toys / circuit bent kids amusement items and the like. Forrest Friends might be the sound of Dragging a toy piano through the dirt with a honkey tonk drumset attached to the tail with a bass string. The mood of this cassette is both over and under the eyes of the listener. BRIGHT symbols shutter dark sounds, low fi off kilter guitar strums, choppy and sparse percussive rhythms are made with the appropriated entropy of dying electronic circuits. This tape claws at the ear slowl, losing TE listener in a jungle of low fidelity haze and then grabbing consciousness and pulling the listener back into a different beach of sound. A rope hangs another fuzzed out string pluck – springs another sound decaying reverb of ESP powers coming to life in a blown capacitor!
The sounds of this tape bounce off of similar species – – this state park issued sludge that weeps and squeaks through horns, guitars, keyboards, synthesizers gently walking and peeking in a shuddering tone for ones friends. A box of broken toys are jarring on each other feedback pulsing to another ping from one pang to the next guitar string zing- chumps a broken cymbal hit Forrest Friends is an amalgamation of psychedelic rock throwing up on itself into dense rain forrests of prickling picking broken guitars. Distant squeals undulate each other via circuit bent items from the trash given new life through an orchestration of chaotic pains in a keyboard turning into a jelly doughnut of burping oscillations captured live. Pink Floyd being flushed down the toilet in the wrong direction recorded on a CB radio from 1940 is a good starting point for this tape. If you want the highest fidelity junky tickerings this tape might not be you, but if textured low fi slow churning chaotic tinkering with the dead stuff in aisle 3 of Toys R us is your thing, so is this tape. Nice artwork and foldout special
Cut insert with sexy green shells! Catch them LIVE in Oakland, CA at LCM Thursday, March 28th as part of the Ratskin Explastical series. Here’s the poster …
A good friend and seminal member of the bay area noise, experimental metal, and free jazz community Mr. Jay Korber was involved in an extremely life threatening bicycle accident, where he was ran over and dragged by one of the sweet sweeper trucks that paurse the SOMA district of San Francisco. (http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2012/12/cyclist_gets_trapped_under_cit.php) For many, this would have signaled the end/death/whatever. but for Mr. Korber, tough as nails, the doctors predict that a FULL RECOVERY is possible. His pelvis was completely shattered, amongst many other serious, life threatening injuries, and he endured many emergency “life saving” surgeries- just in his first few days at SF General Hospital. Throughout all of this unexpected chaos – the endless chain of apathetic doctors, buzzing machines, tubes, blood transfusions, confusiion from the drugs and painkillers, Jay has managed to keep a positive attitude and even the occasional burst of humor. His Girlfriend Angie, has been a huge support for him, easing the burden on Jay and his wonderful, but shocked/traumatized family, as well supplying the lifeline of information and updates between Jay and the concerned, bay area music/art community. Jay has been playing wonderful, aggressively exciting, tense music in the bay area for a decade, or more? now through various bands, such as current projects BURMESE, NUCLEAR DEATH WISH, ETTRICK and other projects such as KORBER/YEDA
DUO , ELF ASS, PUKE VOMIT, plus a slew of other projects. Here’s a video of him doing an extremely rare solo noise set from 2008,
Jay has been offering his music, thoughts, and art up to the bay area (any beyond) for years and now, never asking for anything but a spot to tune up or drop his drums, but now Jay’s life is changed drastically, at least for the time being, and any dealings with the city will take years. What does this mean? JAY NEEDS OUR HELP NOW!!. He needs his rent paid, medical supplies, a wheelchair, new glasses, the list goes on and on. Now Jay, being the kindred old spirit that he is , would NEVER ask for help, even when he does need it, which is exactly why we need to come forth and bond together as am artistic community to show solidarity and help him out. To HONESTLY call a group of artists, musicians, and cultural curators a “community” or “scene” comes with certain requirements, one being mutual community support for all members when something goes wrong. A chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link, and right now there is a broken link, which means the chain is not at 100% , and we need to help fix that. Jay has enormous strength and what Macho Man Randy savage would call, “intestinal fortitude”, and he WILL pull through this, but he needs our moral, emotional, creative, and FINANCIAL support above all. If you’ve ever come to a Ratskin show, and been given a free beer, take that $5 that you would’ve been charged at a bar for it, and give it to someone who needs it. Donation link is right below here… Benefit shows to be held at local underground Oakland and San Francisco venues are in the works, but for NOW , please consider making a small donation here….

This incident has shaken the entire bay area music/art community, as Jay is such an inspirational life force and positive influence for us all, it only seems natural to give it right back to him….Have other ideas how you can help? Please email us at decaycast(at)gmail.com and we’ll be sure it gets to the right people.
Love and recovery,

Decaycast #005: Studio invasion interview with Laetitia Sonami {56 mb – 192kb mp3}
In the second installment of the Decaycast sound artist studio-invasion interview series, Decaycast sits down with sound artist, performer, composer, teacher, and all around wonder woman Laetitia Sonami. Here is the audio map of the first half of Decaycast’s excavation into the deepest darkest crevices of sound, time, space, toilet plungers, nature, sound abatement, the politics of poverty as art, mechanical devices and the Danube River as told by the artist herself—the file finishes out with a performance by Laetitia on her “Lady’s Glove.”

ALSO,Please goto npr’s blog and listen to all the other cool stuff that happened that very same afternoon
Alright, for the newest episode of Decaycast, we decided to abolish the hours and hours of meticulous editing that are at the root of every episode of Decaycast, and construct an episode based entirely on the live mix. Let it fly, and leave it all in; Noise blasts, digital distortion, and all. Thanks to Zefrey and the other wonderful folks at Neighborhood Public Radio and Southern Exposure Gallery, and Hidden Noises project, we were able to do this last saturday, March 24th, live on NPR’s airwaves, which broadcast at 88.9fm to a small radius within their home-base at 25th & Mission St. in SF
The episode will be posted as soon as we get our grubby little collaging hands on the audio file, which currently resides in NPR vault. check back soon! <hehe>
Decaycast is always looking for contributions, please send any sound pieces to decaycast@gmail.com . Rest assured they will exit dr. decaycast’s audio regurgitator tweaked, mashed, and faded into the aural mind-fuck that is Decaycast…That’s just what we do here…
