Man Down, BUT NOT OUT: Help Jay Korber’s Road To Recovery!!!

korberA  good  friend and  seminal member of the  bay area  noise, experimental metal, and  free  jazz community Mr.  Jay Korber  was involved in an extremely life  threatening bicycle accident, where he was  ran over and  dragged by one of the  sweet sweeper trucks  that  paurse the  SOMA district of  San Francisco. (http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2012/12/cyclist_gets_trapped_under_cit.php) For many, this  would have  signaled the  end/death/whatever. but for Mr. Korber, tough as  nails, the  doctors predict  that a  FULL RECOVERY is possible.  His pelvis was   completely shattered, amongst many other  serious, life  threatening injuries,  and  he  endured  many emergency “life  saving”  surgeries-  just in  his  first  few  days at  SF General Hospital.   Throughout all of  this unexpected chaos – the  endless  chain of  apathetic doctors, buzzing machines,  tubes,  blood  transfusions,  confusiion from the  drugs  and  painkillers,  Jay has  managed to keep a  positive attitude  and  even the  occasional burst of  humor. His Girlfriend Angie, has been  a huge  support for him, easing the  burden on Jay and  his wonderful, but  shocked/traumatized  family, as well supplying the lifeline  of information and updates between Jay and the   concerned, bay area music/art  community. Jay has  been playing wonderful, aggressively exciting, tense music in the  bay area   for  a  decade, or more? now through various bands,  such as  current  projects BURMESE, NUCLEAR DEATH WISH, ETTRICK and other  projects such as KORBER/YEDA
DUO , ELF  ASS, PUKE VOMIT, plus a slew of other projects.  Here’s a video of him doing an extremely rare solo noise set from 2008,
Jay has  been offering his music, thoughts, and  art  up to the  bay area  (any beyond) for  years  and  now, never asking for anything but a  spot to  tune up or  drop his drums, but now Jay’s life is  changed  drastically, at  least for the time  being, and  any dealings with the  city will take  years. What does  this mean?   JAY NEEDS OUR  HELP  NOW!!. He needs his rent  paid, medical  supplies, a  wheelchair, new  glasses, the  list goes on  and on. Now  Jay, being the kindred old  spirit that he  is , would NEVER ask  for help, even when he does  need it,   which is  exactly why we  need to come  forth and  bond together as am artistic community  to show solidarity and help him out.  To  HONESTLY call a group of artists, musicians, and cultural  curators a   “community” or  “scene” comes with   certain requirements, one  being  mutual  community support  for  all members  when something  goes  wrong. A  chain is  only as  strong as  it’s  weakest link, and  right now there  is a broken link,  which means the chain is not at 100% , and we need to help fix that. Jay has  enormous strength and what Macho Man  Randy savage  would call, “intestinal fortitude”, and he  WILL pull  through this, but he needs our  moral, emotional,  creative, and FINANCIAL support above all. If  you’ve ever come to a Ratskin show, and been given a free  beer, take that $5 that  you  would’ve been charged at a bar for it, and give it to someone who  needs it.  Donation link is right below here…   Benefit shows  to be held  at  local underground Oakland  and  San Francisco venues are  in the works, but for NOW , please  consider  making a  small donation here….

This incident has shaken the entire bay area music/art community, as Jay is such an inspirational life force and positive influence for us all, it only seems natural to give it right back to him….Have other ideas how you can help? Please email us at decaycast(at)gmail.com and we’ll be sure it gets to the right people.
Love and recovery,

decayREVIEWS: GROUP RHODA “Out Of Time, Out Of Touch” LP (Night School Records, 2012)

GROUP  RHODA “Out Of Time, Out Of Touch” LP (Night School Records, 2012)

group-rhoda-work.1

The freshman LP from Bay area antiquated calypso dark, synth crafter GROUP RHODA. This  album opens up a palette of  new, yet historically sound territory in a concise and smart hybrid stylized record. GR offers the listener a cobustion of exploding space dust, writing a narrative based under the cloak of science fiction fact mantras of fucked up up up non pop non music music. Palpitating drum machines support arpeggiated synths and keyboards, important yet subtly giving breath to well placed vocal hymns, present yet dissonant procrto-pop song structures,  crawling heads of funky texture time and timbre amalgamations — an intelligent species of sound variety, washes the brain in sonic bleach — out front vocal melodies, with space based lyrics to boot  round out this  hybrid-style proto pop offering from bay area resident, Mara.

GROUP RHODA paints a drodweamy, sonic desert island, yet a oobmetaptghysical hurricane eye approaches off the coast of subtle silence – slides up
Your back and into the conscious rain Suspended between a memory room
Raft and orchestrated melodies from accellerating space ships GROUP RHODA dangles theories and structures in front of the listener, that are both from the future and the past. At times dark, minimal
Synth and at times more lush sounding electronics this album breaths a bit of variety, which is dime….funky arpeggiated bass lines and calypso style percussion, purring drum machines and whispering, shaking, powerful vocals
Round this record out quite nice.

STUCK between a pastel wash and a deep maroon hell – this album paints both a bleak and blissful sonic offering Get it from GROUP RHODA locally in the bay area or from the label direct. Crazy strange art from both SUZY POLING and NICOLE GINELLI.

Night School Records.

decayREVIEWS: DRAG AGE “Mask Of A Crushed Insect” c12 (OOBR, 2012)

drag-age-crushed-insectAnother  gem from  Rob B’s Out Of Body Records DRAG AGE carves sharp, dissonant, alienating sounds from sources and  inspirations unknown.  The A  side opens up with a  amalgamation of low synthesizer  pulses, crushed and  fuzzed and  fizzed to deathm Harsh shrieks, building churning bowels with Howling groans and  yells,  broken rhythmic stabs of  skin pulse – a hallway filled with blood and broken Speakers —- spells your own death day to you—-reverberations of hell – this is bleak, dissonant music for the alienated species. Harsh, buzzing,  swelling synthesizers of vile bile electronic mayhem- DRAG AGE drags bouncing skulls behind a truck and records the sound and blasts it back into your ears just before your head is severed from the rest of your body in a totalitarian sonic massacre.

The B side, if much of the same, short, Pulsing, punching feedback,  shaking , grating distortion, shuttering howels of negativity as HELL air from shredded speaker surrounds you , Drag Age brings the listener to that dark place they subconsciously neglect; A bleak, hairy clump of industrial fuzz, blended and stitched skin.  Overall the  B side I  felt had some more  unique sounds  and  textures going on, makes me think the tape  should’ve been flipped, but overall pretty solid. Through male and female vocal howlings, nicely textured ambient sections to glue this short little number together., DRAG AGE does a great job at this all so common style of death/industrial/power electronics !!!!!  Lots of interesting and textured sounds and events packed into twelve minutes of cassette tape, if not just a bit  short.  The  label  should still have a few  copies , i believe.

COMPACTOR “Desensitization Reprocessing” CS (OOBR, 2012)

COVER FINAL copy

COMPACTOR “Desensitization Reprocessing” CS (OOBR, 2012)RIGHT FROM THE FIRST PUNCH – Compactor squishes fuzzed and thizzed big beats – spastic churning, hissing machines – phasing out of value the automaton human rhythm production facility – this is beat dominant- off the bat with grind core styled sequence percussion with looping scraping drowning and pulling robots dragging each other through the background of the soundscape – nice track breaks give breath to separate ventures to a at times minimal
Techno jukebox gone awry with subtle layers of hissing and hawing in the distance – creeping closer and then back into the unknown . …..

The B SIDE gives a bit more breath as it moves at a slower pace to give pulsing developing beats time to build the structure before they inherently self destruct. A drone fly peeps at your cochlear as this tape often sounds like a sound tropes trapped inside another sound trapped inside another – with different layers of pulsing fuzz that ebb and flow giving clarity to the beat and then swelling it back into obscurity.  Compactor sandwiches a nice mix of  harsh blown out  recording techniques which  give a live  feel, and  some cutting  and  chopping  which speak t0 a  larger compositional mantra, This tape is a brain/ sound compactor in itself – somewhere broken between noise / electronic death drums and bass stabs of shaking resonance :: compactor brings a complete sonic package of the rolling down the road of percussion on fast fwd style – whatever that is- ??? But the second half of the second side slowly shifts into a distant hum – you are trapped inside the chickens stomach after it crossed the road- subtle bleeps, slips, and rakes are quietly eclipsed by an ominous dark droning buzzing – the best part ! A great end to a good tape!!!

DECAYCAST023 : BONUS BEAST “THE DISASTER TAPE”

Creeping, crawling, oozing through the  goo,   the sound chopped brain shatterings bleedin  drum and feedback stabs  of subconscious car  wreck – spiritual flashlight  catches on fire and the  sound of  your  ears  buzzing your brain, reminds you that  this is a dream. This reality is a disaster.  Scribble it out and  try again once your  back on earth?

Carpet wall dungeon sonic pulses of the  9th dimension of hall and a  choking  disco  soldier of well crafted broken leg dancing  hymns. PLUG IN THE  HARDDRIVE OF THE  STARS  until they burn your  eyes  back into the  worm dirt.

decayREVIEWS: 11/12/12 BLACK THREAD , CBD TRIO at Tom’s Place.

I have been seeing postings for this  infamous  Tom’s Place underground house venue for a few years, and never managed to venture out there for a gig, Packed up the Decaywheels and  blazed out, after walking around in the dark Berkeley streets for a few minutes, I found what was “Tom’s Place” My first (and only real) critique of the show/venue was they need a S I G N. I scrambled to  find the  address before neighbors  began calling the  5 0  on an unsuspecting show  goer in all black and a leather jacket, “were not In Oakland anymore”  is all I kept  saying.  right, anyways, once I found the right spot, I was  greeted with  delicious snacks, a  small but attentive and passionate audience (which is a delicacy in the bay area these days)- After years of  seeing/playing/hosting underground oddball music/noise/sound performance in the  mold encrusted basement, This  clean warm home was a wonderful setting to soak up the warm, sputtering, slow heating tones and cassette pulses of Donkey Disk ‘s head honcho BLACK THREAD.

Thread offers up a shiny, sticky, moist, sputtering masterly level of subtle tape  manipulations, climbing distant ringing tones, Ancient ships lost in the controller’s fog tunnel, send morsecoded hymns of cracking tapes, and choking whispers of feedback. The artist warmed and encrusted the room  through magnetic fingers- encapsulated the controls, subtle pulsing loops, oozing and plushing  the house speaker  system into a dream wash of well crafted minimal  compositions. Top  notch, get the  video here….

Next up was the  CBD trio. Top notch free jazz  undertones with dynamic and  interesting improvisation  from Chris Brown on piano and electronics, Donald  Robinson on drums, and Biggi Vinkeloe on reeds. Subtle,  well done free  jazz  with an ear  for  space, dynamics and  tension.  All  flowed like a  brook of  subtle percussion, intense piano hits and  swelling dynamics.  Not  my genre  forte but these  cats are  clearly well  versed in the game.

A great and  unique show  overall.  check TOMS PLACE happenings in the future.  Come help on the  jigsaw puzzle.

decayREVIEWS: DEIGN “PECUNIARY HUCKSTER” C20 (OOBR)

Out Of  Body Records  is at it  again, WE  REALLY LIKE THIS IMPRINT!! And up next is a project from PTM Jim…
DEIGN cuts, chops,  hisses, smashes and pisses  their way through intense, dynamic cut up chopped sounds and emotions, at  times screeching and at times  rumbling,  jarring, dark,  the sound of  entropy.  High pitched washes of  white noise, sucking out your  last breaths The DEIGN  soundsdrum up to menacing  shaking pulses of  doubt, alienation, nervousness, sound mixes with blood, pus, and  disease  plagued cochlear. Stainless steel easrplugs cant  save  you from this  menacing sound clawing in your ear and  carving it out from the inside. There is someone watching you, waiting, broken brain, ready to attack and  throw your motionless  corpse back into the  cog  of the machine where it was spawned from. THIS IS  DARK DARK CUT UP SOUNDS.

Rumpling pules, chaotic feedback modulation, scratchy cut up (tape?) sounds, industrialized distant  rhythms, blood hymns, and unknown objects pushed in the red seemlessly  blend together  different  levels of the  conspiracy of  self doubt-  This  tape contains sounds to break down the  psyche and  start over. MEANINGS  regurtitating themselves in the form of  the sounds of a pack of  rabid dogs being slayed in the  distance, approaching, the  blood smell is metallic, a grating, gnarley wind of  death   invades your  ears and into the skull. Personal political monsters are no match for this  alienating anomaly.

Look as the eye  in the sky proves you are alone from your  own perspective,  while a nervous, scattering, broken machine subtly yet  intrusively hovers above. DEIGN is  top notch in the  harsh/cut up/industrial, whatever  the  fuck game.  Check this out, as  it’s becoming a treat to  hear a project in this aesthetic vein that works  with such care and  intent. Dark, cynical, jarring cut up industrial / noises played with purpose and a nod to the void at the same time.  The  art  and overall production value of this release is no  surprise as  Denton, TX Out Of Body Records  delivers  top notch production value which elevates this  tape to  another  level.

decayREVIEWS: KILT “La Santa Muerte” cs (2012)

US scattered super group KILT, (Bob Bellerue, Raven Chacon, and AndorKappen recently made a trek through the Bay Area a few weeks ago and farted out one of these little tour tapes my direction, It’s a cassette version of a forthcoming LP, (which I was lucky enough to receive one of the test presses for (mwahahaha) but the cassette will get the review as it’s exists in it’s final form.
Popped this lil sucker into the stereo. Intro’s with slow winds, creeks, gentle shudders, and whisps from a distant cracked window. This seems unusually nerving for this dynamic outfit, yet the intensity starts building, building, building, and clawing at your inner most ear hole, crawling in and leaving a vile sonic infection which begins to ooze and pus with the blackened fluids that is “La SantaMuerte”. Before your system can react, flesh is pummeled with barely discernable vocals, pummeling feedback, high pitched cuts and scrapes, buzzing distortions, oscillators- POWERFUL SOUNDS. Peaking and troughing with dynamic rhythmic slams, ascending frequency modulations, and, the tension of metal cables snapping, architectural misfortunes – KILT ebbs and flows like the shifting of California’s unstable tectonic plate museum. A dark, chaotic machine chugging through the batten landscape of a failed system.

Flip this little devil and it’s more of the same. Dense thought out composition, harsh, vibrating spaces are carved out with scientific precision, theatrical dynamics, and swelling bass and distortion. Occasionally locking into a groove and then dicinigrating said groove within seconds, gives this release dark, yet traceable pacing – a must for fans of harsh noise, and negative spaces. This power trio does not disappoint in the slightest with this release, be sure to pick up the LP as soon as it drops, if it sounds good on tape, it should warm up nice in helllllllllll……..
